One of Tim Berners-Lee’s major predictions is that artificial intelligence (AI) will change the way we interact with the web.
With the advent of generative AI tools like OpenAI’s GPT Chat, technology companies are betting that consumers will increasingly engage with digital chatbots to obtain the information they need and assist them in producing written materials and even code.
Already, companies are trying to reimagine how our interaction with the web will look like using AI-powered devices, including Samsung with its Galaxy S24 smartphone and Humane AI with its wearable device, Pin.
Berners-Lee believes that one day we will have AI assistants working for us, akin to our doctors, lawyers, and bankers.
Speaking to CNBC via a video call on Zoom last week, Berners-Lee said, “Some people are worried about whether AI will be stronger than us in 35 years.”
“One thing I anticipate is that you’ll have an AI assistant you can trust and that works for you, like a doctor.”
Robert Blumofe, Chief Technology Officer at Akamai, believes that the web will cease to be something humans use and that AI clients will take the reins on our behalf.
Blumofe told CNBC in an interview last week, “You can imagine a world years from now where the web becomes a world for AI clients, and humans no longer effectively use the web.”
“All of that will be done through AI clients; you will never go directly to your bank account online, or your healthcare provider online, or any e-commerce sites.”
Akamai was founded in response to the challenge posed by Tim Berners-Lee at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in early 1995 to create a new way of delivering web content to end-users faster.
Blumofe still believes that we will connect to the internet to watch entertainment TV shows, movies, and video games. However, he thinks that many of the day-to-day functions of our lives online will be managed by artificial intelligence in the future.
