Utilizing advanced climate computer models to project into the distant future, researchers from the University of Bristol, UK, have forecasted the occurrence of extreme climatic events following the eventual merging of the world’s continents to form a colossal, uninhabitable landmass known as “Pangaea Ultima” approximately 250 million years from now. The study, detailed in the journal Nature Geoscience, envisions an atmosphere that would be excessively hot and arid, making it unsuitable for human or mammalian habitation.
The scientists, employing cutting-edge climate models, simulated temperature variations, wind dynamics, rainfall patterns, and humidity levels on Pangaea Ultima. They integrated models for tectonic plate movements, ocean chemistry, and biology to assess carbon dioxide levels. The study suggests that the formation of Pangaea Ultima would lead to heightened volcanic activity, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and elevating global temperatures. Additionally, the sun’s increased intensity would emit more energy, contributing to a substantial rise in Earth’s temperature.
Lead researcher Alexander Farnsworth indicated that the escalating temperatures would create an environment devoid of food and water sources for mammals, ultimately leading to human extinction. While this grim outlook is set in the distant future, around 250 million years, it serves as a cautionary signal for potential hazards.
The report underscores that Pangaea Ultima’s formation would likely result in an uninhabitable environment due to scorching heat. Average temperatures ranging between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius, coupled with high daily temperatures and increased humidity levels, would render most of the planet unsuitable for life.
The study advocates for a shift away from fossil fuel usage as a means to avert this catastrophic scenario. Professor Benjamin Mills from the University of Leeds, a co-author of the report, argues that an increased reliance on fossil fuels could hasten humanity’s demise on Earth, potentially occurring much sooner than anticipated.
Co-author Yunis Lu, a climate change researcher at the University of Bristol, emphasized the importance of addressing the ongoing climate crisis resulting from human greenhouse gas emissions. While the anticipated uninhabitability of the planet is set in the distant future, Lu highlighted the current impact of extreme heat on human health, emphasizing the urgency of achieving net-zero emissions promptly.
