Apple has heightened its stance on government access to phone notifications, now stipulating that law enforcement must secure a court order before the company divulges immediate customer notification data. This aligns Apple’s policy with its competitor, Google, and the updated guidelines were featured on the law enforcement application page. This shift comes on the heels of the disclosure that both Apple and Google have been providing details about notifications to governmental authorities.
U.S. Senator Ron Wyden brought attention to the fact that officials have been making requests for such data from both Apple and Google. Notifications play a crucial role across various applications, alerting smartphone users to incoming messages, urgent news, and other updates. Whether it’s an incoming text or email, these notifications are dispatched to your phone to provide alerts even when the corresponding app is not actively in use.
In a letter addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Wyden emphasized, “The notification process involves potentially sensitive information that applications share with Apple and Google. This includes descriptive data outlining which app sent a notification, the precise timing of the notification, and the associated Apple or Google account that received the notification.”
