On Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed the company’s interest in collaborating with Sam Altman, the founder and recently ousted CEO of OpenAI, and his team. Regardless of their location, whether they choose to stay with their current company or join Microsoft, Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to cooperation with OpenAI.
In interviews with Bloomberg and CNBC, Nadella highlighted Microsoft’s capabilities to sustain innovation and competitiveness in the artificial intelligence market. Despite this, he underscored the importance of Microsoft’s ongoing partnership with OpenAI, Sam Altman, and his team.
Regarding Altman’s recent departure from OpenAI, Nadella stated that he was not aware in advance of OpenAI’s board decision to remove Altman. He expressed confidence in Altman and his extensive experience in the field of artificial intelligence, stating that Altman’s confidence in Microsoft is evident in his choice to collaborate with the company.
Nadella also stressed the significance of implementing organizational changes within OpenAI to ensure stability in the partnership between the two companies. He mentioned that impactful administrative and functional decisions should be made through consultation and discussion.
In response to inquiries about Altman potentially joining Microsoft, Nadella indicated that the decision rests with OpenAI’s founder and the evolving situation within Altman’s company. Nevertheless, he expressed Microsoft’s eagerness to maintain a strong relationship with Altman and his team, regardless of their work location.
Highlighting the potential impact of Altman and his colleague Greg Brockman joining Microsoft, Nadella mentioned that it would enhance the research efforts of Microsoft’s new sector focused on advanced artificial intelligence research. He pointed out Microsoft’s extensive involvement in the artificial intelligence market, from unique personal assistant capabilities like Copilots to the introduction of its initial chips for training artificial intelligence models, Microsoft Maia.
Nadella emphasized that Microsoft has demonstrated its ability to adapt to rapid developments in the market through various services offered on its Azure cloud services platform. The company has also provided a range of open-source artificial intelligence models and features in various office services, such as Microsoft 365 and Teams, as well as its Windows operating systems, including Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Earlier on Monday, Nadella officially announced the inclusion of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with a team of their colleagues, in the new Microsoft sector dedicated to advanced artificial intelligence research. This move follows their pivotal role in seeking reconciliation between OpenAI’s founder and the company’s board to resolve internal conflicts and potentially reinstate Altman.
