Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has undergone a restructuring of its artificial intelligence (AI) team responsible for addressing the potential harms associated with its AI technology. This strategic shift comes as Meta directs more resources towards the development of generative AI.
The American tech giant has announced the redistribution of members from the responsible AI team to various other divisions within the company. These team members will continue their efforts to mitigate the potential harms linked to AI technology, as reported by Reuters.
This organizational change is part of a broader initiative to realign Meta’s internal AI teams, according to insights from The Information, citing an internal communication.
The majority of employees from the responsible AI team are now transitioning to Meta’s generative AI team, which was established in February with the goal of creating products in the field of generative AI.
A spokesperson from Meta clarified that other team members are moving to the AI infrastructure unit within the company. This unit focuses on developing the necessary systems and tools for the construction and operation of AI products.
Meta consistently underscores its commitment to responsible AI development, maintaining a dedicated page outlining principles such as accountability, transparency, safety, and privacy.
John Carvill, a representative for Meta, affirmed the company’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing and investing in the development of safe and responsible AI. He stated that team members would continue to contribute to related efforts across Meta concerning the responsible development and utilization of AI.
In an earlier restructuring this year, the responsible AI team underwent changes, including employee layoffs, transforming it from a standalone team into a more integrated framework.
The original responsible AI team, established in 2019, operated with limited autonomy, requiring extensive negotiations with various departments for its initiatives.
Meta’s decision to reshape its responsible AI approach aligns with the global trend of governments actively working to establish regulatory frameworks for AI development. In the United States, government agreements with AI companies have been initiated, and President Biden has instructed government agencies to formulate rules ensuring the safety of AI.
Simultaneously, the European Union has outlined its principles for AI, though it is still navigating the approval process for comprehensive AI legislation.
