McAfee, the cybersecurity company, has announced a new technology leveraging artificial intelligence to detect fake voices. The company states that the accuracy of detecting fake voices using the new technology currently exceeds 90%. This technology has been developed based on its proprietary artificial intelligence model. Referred to as “Project Mockingbird,” the technology was developed in response to the increasing use of fake voices in fraudulent activities.
The proliferation of deepfake tools and artificial intelligence models that manipulate voices has facilitated the spread of fake voices. These voices are employed to facilitate fraud, deception, and the dissemination of falsehoods online. The technology works by analyzing audio clips and distinguishing between genuine and generated parts created using artificial intelligence tools. Additionally, it is useful for analyzing voices accompanying video clips to verify their authenticity.
Deepfake operations involving voices and video clips have witnessed a surge recently due to the advancements in the tools used to produce them. McAfee has observed numerous posts relying on such manipulated content on social media platforms. Steve Grobman, the Chief Technology Officer at McAfee, remarked that there is a rapid shift towards cybercriminals using generative artificial intelligence to carry out a wide range of fraudulent activities. He warned about the consequences of employing deepfake mechanisms in significant events, such as political elections.
