Innovations aimed at combating climate change took center stage at the Las Vegas Electronics Show, according to a report by the French news agency. With 2023 marked as the hottest year ever recorded, technology companies unveiled potential solutions to this major crisis during the Las Vegas exhibition, which concluded its activities on January 12, 2024.
One notable invention presented at the event is the “WaterCube” by Genesis Systems, a device the size of an air conditioner that can extract drinking water from the surrounding air. David Stockenberg, who co-founded the company with his wife Shannon, states, “Our primary goal is to provide a sustainable response to the global water shortage.” He highlights that billions of tons of water exist in the air all over the planet, and due to global warming, the amount of water vapor resulting from the evaporation of liquid water bodies on the Earth’s surface will increase in the atmosphere.
Companies like Genesis Systems aim to extract this airborne water to supply inhabitants of arid regions with water. However, the cost of each device of this kind is no less than $19,000. Stockenberg explains that once the system is connected to a home, residents can do without relying on the city’s water network. Additionally, his company, based in Florida, seeks to have its devices play a role in removing carbon from the air, another crucial aspect of combating climate change. The carbon capture technology involves air drying, a process already implemented by the WaterCube, according to the company’s president.
