Chinese company Honor has revealed the latest version of its smartphone user interface, Magic OS 8, introducing a new set of artificial intelligence experiences through a feature called Magic Portal.
The Chinese company explained that the “Magic Portal” feature makes use of the company’s first smartphone user interface to anticipate user intentions before they need to execute any commands.
The Magic OS 8 interface suggests applications and services that users might need to deal with specific types of data. For example, if a user receives a geographical location within a messaging app and long-presses on the location data, dragging it to the right, a small window will pop up with suggested applications, such as map services, ride-hailing requests, and more.
Honor collaborated with developers for over 100 applications within China to ensure that digital services align with the Magic Portal feature. This ensures that users of Honor smartphones have a seamless and intelligent experience in performing daily tasks.
The new interface also introduces a “Smart Feature” that deals with texts and images, as well as understands gestures from users’ hands and eyes.
Last year, during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit 2023, Honor revealed a feature called Magic Capsule. This feature allows users to interact with the top-middle part of the phone screen simply by looking at it, resembling the interaction with Apple’s Face ID interface.
Honor emphasized that the Magic Capsule feature relies on a Multi-Modal Large Language Model (LLM), primarily based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.
The company highlighted its commitment to providing a locally functioning artificial intelligence model on the phone itself, without the need to connect to the company’s servers. This model, named MagicLM, offers a range of benefits to users, such as creating videos from stored video clips on the phone through voice commands to the model.
Additionally, Honor will utilize its smart model, functioning locally on its future phones, to power its intelligent voice assistant YOYO, eliminating the need for an internet connection.
The new interface will be introduced to the Honor 50 series, up to the Honor 100 series, as well as the Magic 3, Magic 4, Magic 5, and the upcoming Magic 6 series, expected to be unveiled in March at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona.
