Google is exploring the possibility of substituting some of its human workforce with artificial intelligence (AI), as the ongoing trend toward automating jobs with AI persists, even among prominent technology firms.
The company is contemplating transferring or letting go of certain members of the sales team whose responsibilities have been automated by the newly implemented AI tools.
Although the exact number of affected employees remains unclear, this move distinctly signals the advent of a new era in AI-supported advertising that Google initiated earlier this year.
Google characterizes this form of advertising as a means to enrich advertisers’ interactions with Google. This involves the creation of AI-generated assets for clients, particularly in crafting specialized advertising campaigns.
With around 30,000 employees in its advertising division, half of whom focus on selling ads for specific Google services that are now less in demand, such as YouTube, Search, Gmail, and Maps, due to advertisers relying on artificial intelligence, the company is positioned to enhance profitability through cost reductions.
The advertising sector constitutes a substantial portion of the company’s revenue, and the potential replacement of employees with AI could lead to sustained long-term financial gains for Google.
Numerous roles in the advertising sales unit have become redundant because of Google’s introduction of new AI tools capable of automatically generating ads for clients with minimal employee intervention.
It’s not only advertising sales positions that are susceptible to replacement by artificial intelligence; as AI progresses, many traditionally human-held positions are at risk.
The versatility of AI to replace various jobs was underscored in a report by web hosting company Hostinger earlier this year. The report indicated that AI has the potential to replace numerous jobs across sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and financial services.
Globally, healthcare, particularly administrative tasks in hospitals, could be among the first positions to be replaced by artificial intelligence.
The rise of artificial intelligence has also given rise to the creation of numerous new positions that did not exist before, including roles like a language model engineer, AI trainers, and auditors.
Earlier in the year, Google carried out a significant layoff, releasing approximately 12,000 employees, marking it as the largest downsizing in the company’s history.
