Yesterday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned that the European Union must “double its efforts” to avoid falling behind in the global race for artificial intelligence, which has become “the new frontier of competitive advantage,” according to a report by the French news agency.
In a speech delivered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, von der Leyen stated, “The one who comes first serves first, and the race has already begun; our future competitiveness depends on integrating artificial intelligence into our daily activities.”
She emphasized that “artificial intelligence is capable of boosting productivity at an unprecedented rate… these are the new boundaries of competitive capability, and Europe is in a position that allows it to become a champion in artificial intelligence used to transform vital infrastructures.”
While the United States and China currently lead the scene in the development of these technologies, von der Leyen said, “Europe must double its efforts and demonstrate the way towards the responsible use of artificial intelligence.”
