DP World Navigates Cybersecurity Challenges to Restore Operations at Key Australian Ports

DP World, the global port operator, announced today a significant breakthrough in restoring normal transportation operations at major Australian ports. The ports experienced a two-day disruption due to a persistent cyber security incident, as reported by various agencies.

Australian government agencies held emergency talks over the weekend to address a “serious and ongoing” cyber security incident affecting key ports, according to Clare O’Neil, Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security.

DP World manages approximately 40% of the country’s import and export goods. On Friday, the port operator took preventative measures by shutting down internet communications at ports in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Fremantle to prevent unauthorized access to its network.

While container unloading from ships remained unaffected, truck movements within and outside the ports were halted, said Blake Terny, Director at DP World.

In a statement, Terny mentioned that the company has taken substantial measures to collaborate with cybersecurity experts and is actively investigating vital systems to resume regular shipping operations securely.

DP World aims to swiftly restore normal operations, prioritizing safety, and is conducting a thorough investigation into information access and data theft, Terny added.

The Australian Federal Police is currently investigating the incident. Darren Goldie, National Coordinator for Cybersecurity, stated that DP World informed the government that any disruption is expected to be resolved within several days, not weeks.

Despite the IT systems at DP World’s ports being disconnected from the internet, the company can still access critical shipments in the case of emergencies, according to Goldie.

Following emergency meetings on Saturday, Goldie reconvened the National Coordination Mechanism on Sunday to coordinate the government’s response with representatives from the maritime and logistics sectors. The National Emergency Management Agency also participated in the meetings.

Goldie, an officer in the Australian Air Force, assumed the role of information security coordinator last July following cyber attacks on the country.

In November 2022, Medibank, Australia’s largest private health insurance company, suffered a cyber attack resulting in the theft of data from 9.7 million customers, including medical records.

Just two months earlier, Optus, the second-largest telecommunications provider, faced a similar cyber attack resulting in the compromise of personal information for 9.8 million people.

These incidents mark the largest information breaches in Australia’s history.

Last week, Optus issued an apology to over a million customers for a “technical network failure” disrupting electronic payments and emergency phone lines. The Australian government initiated an investigation into the malfunction, which, although not identified as a cyber attack, has raised concerns. The Australian Cyber Security Center recorded 76,000 cyber attacks last year, with experts cautioning that many attacks go unreported.
