As the echoes of artillery and explosions reverberate on the front lines of the Gaza Strip in the wake of the Israeli ground offensive, a discreet and silent cyber warfare is unfolding in the realms of the internet, communications networks, and servers. In this domain, the advantage doesn’t seem to clearly favor the Israelis.
A hacking collective, identifying itself as “Cyber Toufan Operations,” claimed responsibility for breaching numerous Israeli websites over the past weekend. The group successfully infiltrated the web hosting company Signature-IT, which counts major businesses like Ace, Shefa Online, Home Center, Auto Depot, and IKEA among its clients.
A video surfaced on the group’s Telegram channel, where the hackers declared their triumph in penetrating the Israeli Ministry of Defense, extracting millions of records related to reserve soldiers and the Israeli army.
Reports from Yedioth Ahronoth and “Wynet” confirmed a substantial breach of Signature-IT’s servers. The stolen files reportedly encompass tens of thousands of details about employees, customers, and transaction specifics conducted by the company. The breach appears to be motivated more by a desire to inflict harm than a pursuit of ransom, according to the reports.
Check Point, an information security company, suggests that the full extent of the damage might unfold over several days. The breach has been confirmed on Signature-IT, and the leaked data includes a database containing approximately 2.2 million users who made purchases on a virtual store.
Cyber experts analyzing the pirate data indicate that around 2.5 to 3 million records have been leaked, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses at a minimum. Some records also reveal the last four digits of credit cards, along with additional details provided during delivery requests. It remains unclear if complete credit card details or other sensitive data have been exposed.
Most of the corporate websites were primarily utilized for marketing purposes, except for those where products could be purchased online.
In a video posted on their Telegram account, an anonymous individual claimed the group’s success in infiltrating the Israeli Ministry of Defense, revealing information about the Israeli military’s Northern Gaza Brigade. The individual disclosed names, military ranks, service numbers, and locations of residence for Israeli soldiers.
The information disclosed went beyond Israeli soldiers, with the masked individual mentioning soldiers with dual nationality from several countries, including Canada, Belgium, and Ukraine, whose information and images were allegedly obtained by the Islamic Resistance.
