With Counter Strike 2, Valve will finally introduce a feature that the CS gaming community has been demanding for years: the ability to refund weapons before the end of the buying phase at the beginning of a round. Other changes are also on the menu.
It has been three months since Valve officially unveiled Counter Strike 2 (CS2), which, let’s remember, will be free for all those who own Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). Given that CS:GO is already a free-to-play game, it can be assumed that Counter-Strike 2 will actually be free for everyone upon its release in mid-2023, which is just around the corner.
But just because the game will be free doesn’t mean that Valve doesn’t want to significantly improve the player experience. Thus, the Steam owner will radically change an aspect of the FPS gameplay: the purchase of weapons at the beginning of a round. To change this longstanding system since Counter-Strike 1.6, Valve drew inspiration from Riot’s FPS, Valorant.
Weapon purchase in Counter Strike 2 transformed Valve elaborated on these changes implemented in the testing phase of Counter-Strike 2 in a Twitter thread, including the ability for players in the buy screen to refund their purchases before the end of the weapon acquisition phase at the start of the round. In this menu, the traditional weapon category wheel will also be replaced with a grid.
Although this change to a grid is mostly cosmetic (although this interface may be clearer), the refund option for weapons is a major gameplay change for the Counter-Strike franchise. Previously, a miss-click on the wrong weapon did not forgive the inexperienced player. Additionally, it encourages the implementation of strategies with the team and allows for reconsideration of the budgetary strategy to adopt for weapons.
Counter-Strike 2 will require loadout choices The biggest change introduced so far in Counter-Strike 2 is the implementation of loadouts following the model of Call of Duty. They will impose weapon choices: players will be able to choose four pistols, five intermediate-level weapons (shotguns / submachine guns), and five rifles to create a personal buy menu. Thus, not all weapons will be available to all players.
