In a bold move, the Beeper Mini app has released an update for Android phones, enabling users to maintain messaging exchanges with iPhone users through iMessage despite Apple’s efforts to restrict the service. The latest update prompts both existing and new Beeper Mini users to link their accounts to a personal Apple ID, a service that can be accessed by anyone without the need for an Apple device.
This update introduces a shift in the account creation process, moving away from merely relying on phone numbers to a primary dependence on users’ Apple ID accounts. The goal is to establish a more robust and stable method for exchanging text messages between Android and iPhone devices via the iMessage service.
This approach is anticipated to pose greater challenges for Apple to block, as the company would need to employ a programmatic method to verify the type and version of the sending and receiving devices, ensuring they are iPhones or other Apple devices. In this scenario, if the sending device is identified as an Android phone, the message will be transmitted as a traditional SMS.
On Monday, Apple declared the ban of the Beeper Mini app due to its utilization of a protocol for push notifications on iPhones, which relies on the iMessage system. This tactic leads Apple’s messaging service to believe that the messages originate from an iPhone.
In its statement, Apple clarified that its decision aims to “safeguard user privacy and protect their cybersecurity from any attempts at fraud or nuisance messages.”
Beeper Mini also announced various new updates, including allowing users to view chats to display the last message they read. They have also revamped the design of the video player within the chats. Furthermore, the app has transitioned to being entirely free after previously being a paid service.
