Apple is actively developing a wireless communication chip that supports Wi-Fi 7, intending to introduce it with the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro in 2025. According to Apple researcher Jeff Po, this chip poses a challenge to Apple’s current partnership with Qualcomm, the supplier of the chip enabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections in iPhones.
Po suggests that Apple may later extend the use of this Wi-Fi chip to include the entire iPhone 18 series in 2026, although specific details about the chip remain undisclosed. Earlier reports from Bloomberg indicated Apple’s development of a chip providing both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies, slated for deployment in its devices from 2025. Subsequent information suggested a temporary halt in development, with no confirmation of a resumed process.
Wi-Fi 7 technology is anticipated to facilitate simultaneous data transmission and reception across 2.4, 5, and 6 gigahertz frequencies when used with a compatible router, offering high-speed connections of up to 40 gigabits per second.
As part of a new strategy, Apple aims to internally develop various components for its devices, reducing dependence on external companies and suppliers. This includes camera sensors, batteries, and fifth-generation network modems that Apple has been working on for years, though notable progress has yet to be achieved.
