Apple is actively developing new health-related features for its smartwatch, gearing up to introduce them with the upcoming releases in the coming year, 2024.
According to the latest report from the American newspaper Bloomberg, the anticipated features encompass the ability to monitor blood pressure through the wrist. The smartwatch will have the capability to detect elevated blood pressure by utilizing special sensors on the blood vessels in the wrist. Additionally, it will be adept at identifying instances of sleep apnea through measurements and respiratory patterns, subsequently notifying users if any abnormal results are detected.
As per the report, the Apple Watch is expected to alert its users when blood pressure exceeds normal measurements, enabling them to inform their healthcare provider. However, the initial release of the watch will not provide specific measurements for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, unlike specialized blood pressure monitoring devices.
Apple traditionally introduces these health-oriented features to guide and alert users when irregular measurements are identified. Nonetheless, it does not replace the need for medical advice or the utilization of dedicated measuring devices. Anticipations suggest that Apple will unveil an upgraded design, likely in the form of the basic version of the watch, with one of its upcoming releases.
It’s important to note that diagnosing sleep apnea typically requires a sleep study at a specialized center. Nevertheless, this technology may assist in simplifying the diagnosis of cases with mild symptoms or tracking previously diagnosed cases, contributing to the enhancement of sleep quality.
Conversely, Apple has announced the discontinuation of sales for its flagship smartwatch models in the United States. “Apple Watch Series 9” and “Apple Watch Ultra 2” will no longer be available for purchase within the United States in the near future.
This decision follows a ruling by the International Trade Commission in an ongoing patent dispute between the iPhone manufacturer and the medical technology company “Masimo” regarding the blood oxygen sensing technology in the smartwatch.
“Apple Watch Series 9” and “Apple Watch Ultra 2” will cease to be available for ordering from the Apple website after December 21, and the smartwatches present in retail stores will no longer be available for sale after December 24 of the same month.
