Have you ever pondered the authenticity of that vintage Chanel bag you purchased from an old-time seller? Well, now you can ascertain its legitimacy with certainty, all thanks to the wonders of artificial intelligence.
Enter Entrupy, a cutting-edge technological service employing AI to confirm the genuineness of second-hand handbags and designer sneakers, ensuring customers receive bona fide products.
Established in 2012, Entrupy claims that its AI technology has been adopted by numerous retailers since December 2020, according to its online presence. The company foresees a continued surge in interest in AI tools, as businesses seek to harness the potential of this technological revolution.
Presently exclusive to luxury goods distributors, Entrupy asserts that its tool effectively authenticates products from renowned luxury brands such as Balenciaga, Burberry, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.
The company envisions that the integration of AI will instill confidence in customers wary of purchasing counterfeit products, fostering trust between luxury product distributors and their clientele. Vidyuth Srinivasan, Entrupy’s co-founder and CEO, shared in a recent interview with Elle, “The primary objective is to instill confidence in the customer.” He emphasized that consumers can now rely on a third party, beyond the seller, vouching for the authenticity of the item.
Interest in Entrupy’s AI services peaked when TikTok announced its collaboration with Entrupy last October, utilizing their expertise to identify counterfeit products on the innovative e-commerce platform, TikTok Shop. This collaboration coincided with the rising influence of creative AI tools, exemplified by technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
To employ the AI-backed authentication tool, distributors insert their smartphones into a device equipped with a microscopic lens, purportedly capable of magnifying the phone’s camera for detailed imaging of product features. Distributors then capture images of the product from various angles using their smartphones.
These images are transmitted to a database housing millions of images from the original inventory, facilitated by an AI algorithm. Entrupy can swiftly deliver a verdict on the product’s authenticity, claiming an impressive accuracy rate of up to 99.1%, as per its website. The company generates an official certificate that retail traders can showcase if the product is deemed authentic.
However, the tool isn’t infallible. The CEO of Entrupy acknowledged to Elle that, currently, the tool’s verification capabilities are limited to major brands due to their heightened susceptibility to fraud.
