Advancements in Semiconductor Manufacturing: The Race to 2-Nanometer Precision

After requesting samples of 2-nanometer chips from both TSMC and Samsung, Qualcomm seems to have initiated the testing phase of the next-generation Exynos processor at the same manufacturing precision.

Samsung appears to have struggled to attract major clients towards its 3-nanometer manufacturing precision, with its production rate not exceeding 60%. TSMC, on the other hand, outperforms its competitors at this precision, planning to reach a production volume of up to 100,000 chips per month by the end of 2024.

According to the latest report from the Korean newspaper Seidaily, Samsung is testing the next-generation Exynos processor at the 2-nanometer manufacturing precision.

This marks the first mention of Samsung’s work on early models at the 2-nanometer manufacturing precision, suggesting that the next-generation Exynos processor may be in the early testing stages. Additionally, Qualcomm has requested samples of the 2-nanometer manufacturing precision from both Samsung and TSMC to be used in the fifth-generation Snapdragon processors.

It is also said that Samsung is developing the Exynos 2500 processor with 10 cores, but it is unlikely that this processor will be mass-produced using the 2-nanometer manufacturing precision until 2026.

According to Kedglobal, Samsung has surpassed TSMC in the race towards the 2-nanometer manufacturing precision, securing a massive production order for 2-nanometer chips from the Japanese company BFN. This order marks the first significant external order in the 2-nanometer chip industry.
