Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has revealed its inaugural electric vehicle, immediately announcing aspirations to become one of the top five players in the automotive industry, according to Reuters.
Company CEO Lei Jun described the car, named “Yu7”, as featuring an “ultra-electric motor” technology with acceleration capabilities surpassing electric vehicles from Tesla and Porsche.
Despite a current surplus in China’s automotive market and a sluggish demand, this did not deter the company’s CEO from proclaiming lofty ambitions.
During the car’s unveiling event, he stated, “Through hard work over the next fifteen to twenty years, we will become one of the top five carmakers in the world and strive to elevate the comprehensive car industry in China.”
He added that these plans include manufacturing a “dream car similar to Porsche and Tesla.”
The “Yu7” car is expected to attract customers due to its integrated operating system with Xiaomi’s popular smartphones and other electronics, offering seamless access to the company’s current mobile applications.
The new car comes in two versions, one with a driving range of up to 668 kilometers on a single charge, and the other up to 800 kilometers. In comparison, Tesla’s Model S reaches a range of 650 kilometers.
The company has not disclosed pricing yet. Lei Jun stated that the cost “will indeed be somewhat high, but it is a cost that everyone believes is justified.”
Xiaomi’s CEO also mentioned that the car boasts rapid charging capabilities in low-temperature conditions and is equipped with advanced technology allowing it to identify obstacles in challenging circumstances such as snowfall.
He added that Xiaomi’s self-driving capabilities will be at the forefront of the industry.
