During the COVID-19 pandemic in India, Flybace, a site, reported on the use of drones as a safety measure during the lockdown. Indian authorities utilized drones to contain the spread of the virus by monitoring streets to prevent unlawful gatherings.
Additionally, UA Vision, another site, documented several cases of drones being used in emergency situations to save lives. Here are some notable examples:
- Rescuing a Trapped Climber at Night:
In 2019, a search and rescue team in Utah, USA, used a drone to rescue a 60-year-old climber trapped on a mountain edge at night. The drone was used as a source of light to help responders locate the man and bring him to safety. - Finding an 88-Year-Old Missing Man:
In Texas, USA, a search and rescue team collaborated with city police to deploy a drone equipped with a thermal camera to locate a missing man. At 11 PM that night, the drone found the man in tall grass in a field, a location that might have been difficult for responders to find on foot or by car. - Locating Two People Trapped on a Mountain in Iceland:
In 2018, a search and rescue team used a drone to locate two individuals stuck on a steep slope on a mountain in Dalvik, Iceland. One of them was holding a cell phone as a light source. Responders used this light to pinpoint their location and relay information to rescue teams on the ground. As a result of this incident, the search and rescue team in Dalvik was honored at the “Ordis 112” awards ceremony in Ljubljana, Slovenia, by the European Emergency Number Association. - Finding a Man Ejected from a Car:
In 2018, a rescue team in Britain used a drone equipped with a thermal camera to find a man ejected from his car after a traffic accident. Initially, the police were desperate to find the missing person because the weather was very cold, and they were concerned about his survival. However, thanks to the drone, they quickly located the man in a six-foot-deep hole near the accident site. The man was suffering from hypothermia when found but was transported to the hospital for treatment and recovered shortly after.
