Climate change poses one of the most significant challenges facing humanity in the current century, sparking questions about the future of planet Earth. This has necessitated the collaboration of scientists, engineers, and experts from various fields to harness their knowledge and skills to devise effective solutions to protect the planet.
Many current research studies anticipate that if immediate measures are not taken to address the effects of climate change, the resulting impacts could lead to food and water shortages in the coming decades, as well as affect human health.
For this reason, all stakeholders have begun to unite efforts to innovate and implement basic steps to mitigate these potential risks through the reliance on data science, emerging technology, and innovation. Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a promising solution that can significantly contribute to tackling this challenge. But how does it do so?
Abdullah Sukkar, a researcher in satellite data analysis and geographic information systems, explains in an interview with Al Jazeera Net: “Employing artificial intelligence in the field of climate change facilitates the understanding and analysis of past climate phenomena faster than traditional methods. It also assists in predicting future climate phenomena” However, he emphasizes that AI is not a magical tool but rather an auxiliary factor in confronting many climate challenges.
Sukkar shares satellite images taken of the marshes area in Iraq in 2020 and 2022, illustrating the significant and accelerating climate change affecting Iraq. Other images of the Tigris River in Samarra, Iraq, in the same years depict drought in the river and a decline in greenery in the region. He asserts that using artificial intelligence in these cases can interpret and analyze these images, providing better and faster results. Moreover, it can predict the future condition of the river and marshes, enabling efforts to mitigate their severity and search for solutions before it’s too late.
