More than 40 founders, investors, engineers, and others in the technology industry have announced a new initiative called “Tech for Palestine” to end technological support for the Israeli war on the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the war in Gaza, advocate for a permanent ceasefire, and provide a platform for those who fear openly supporting Palestine.
The initiative’s founder, Paul Bighar, hopes to amplify awareness about the war in Gaza and push for a permanent cessation of hostilities while offering a platform for those hesitant to openly support Palestine. Bighar launched the initiative after a widely circulated blog post in the tech industry criticized the insufficient support shown by the technology industry for Palestinians.
Bighar stated in his blog post, “The phrase ‘Stop bombing children’ should not be controversial, and certainly support for victims should not cost people their jobs. However, this is the reality tech workers face when opposing Israel’s war on the people of Gaza.” In a press release on the initiative’s website and his blog, Bighar mentioned that thousands of people reached out to him after the blog post, with many fearing to speak up due to potential professional repercussions.
This initiative represents one of the first tech initiatives to take a public stance in support of Palestine, marking a shift in the project industry’s position regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas. More people are openly advocating for a ceasefire, and dozens have initiated projects to change the industry to ensure the voices of those speaking on behalf of Palestine are heard. Many individuals have volunteered to assist in these projects.
The platform, still in its early days, showcases projects managed by small groups and serves as a space for sharing resources and advice, fostering collaboration among technology professionals supportive of Palestinians.
