Sony, the Japanese tech giant, has proudly announced the milestone achievement of selling 50 million units of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) after three years since the platform’s launch. This reflects a robust surge in sales, overcoming initial challenges linked to supply chain disruptions and the global shortage of semiconductor chips.
Launched in November 2020 amid the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 initially grappled with sales obstacles due to widespread supply chain issues and the worldwide chip scarcity.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Sony expressed gratitude, stating, “With the unwavering support of PlayStation enthusiasts globally, PS5 sales have gained substantial momentum this year, fueled by a series of immensely popular game releases.”
Successful titles like “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” which sold over 2.5 million copies within the first twenty-four hours of its late October release, along with “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” and “Demon’s Souls,” played pivotal roles in boosting sales.
Throughout the COVID-19 era, the production and distribution of the PS5, introduced in November 2020, faced challenges due to semiconductor shortages and global shifts in supply chains prompted by health-related measures in numerous countries.
Jim Ryan, President of Sony’s Video Game Division, noted, “We are delighted that, for the first time since the PS5 launch, we have ample inventory of controller units for the year-end holiday season, enabling interested consumers to make purchases.”
Since the introduction of the inaugural PlayStation console in 1994, Sony has evolved into a behemoth in the video gaming industry, with projected revenues exceeding $53 billion this year, as per the estimates of consulting firm Newzoo.
The PS2 retains its status as Sony’s top-selling console, boasting sales surpassing 155 million units, while the PS4 achieved approximately 117 million units sold, according to company records.
Reflecting on the sale of 50 million PS5 units, Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games consultancy in Tokyo, remarked, “This is an astonishing figure, especially considering the PS5’s limited availability in stores during half of its lifecycle.” Toto added, “Ultimately, Sony might indeed surpass the remarkable sales of the PS4 achieved throughout its entire lifecycle.”
