Samsung is on the verge of introducing its inaugural mixed reality glasses in the first quarter of the upcoming year. Anticipated to feature an entirely new Qualcomm processor and a specialized Android system designed for smart glasses, these glasses are likely to be unveiled during the launch event for Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 series phones, set to hit the market in the early months of the next year.
As reported by the Korean site ET News, Hugo Swart, the General Manager of Qualcomm’s Communications division and the direct overseer of the Mixed Reality Glasses chip sector, has declared that the company will debut a cutting-edge chip during the first quarter of 2024.
It’s worth noting that Qualcomm recently disclosed its Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, a chip Meta utilized to power its latest “Quest 3” mixed reality glasses.
The imminent Qualcomm chip is expected to usher in a unique experience for Samsung’s mixed reality glasses, marking the Korean tech giant’s comeback to the smart glasses market after a prolonged hiatus since discontinuing the production of the Galaxy Gear VR virtual reality glasses in November 2020.
In crafting its processor architecture, the company might leverage cores developed by Nuvia, a company acquired by Qualcomm in 2019. These are the same cutting-edge technologies employed by the company in its latest Snapdragon X Elite processor for personal computers, renowned for its exceptional capabilities, including the utilization of artificial intelligence in data processing and graphics.
Further negotiations are underway between LG and Qualcomm, exploring the potential utilization of the upcoming Qualcomm chip in LG’s smart glasses.
The projected price for Samsung and LG glasses equipped with the upcoming Qualcomm processor hovers around $2000. Despite the relatively high price tag, it remains more affordable than Apple’s smart glasses, the “Apple Vision Pro,” which is priced at $3499.
