Elon Musk, the American billionaire, has raised a red flag regarding the future of “human-like robots,” expressing concerns that, despite the advancements in artificial intelligence, these robots might end up “pursuing humans” across various aspects of life.
These cautionary remarks came during a meeting between Musk, the influential figure behind Tesla and SpaceX, and the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, at the first-ever World Artificial Intelligence Summit held at Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom.
Musk predicted a future where no jobs are deemed necessary, and employment opportunities will only be available for those seeking personal satisfaction in their work. Drawing a parallel between artificial intelligence and a “magic genie” capable of fulfilling all desires, Musk pointed out that fairy tales rarely conclude with a happily-ever-after.
Highlighting a forthcoming challenge, Musk pondered the quest for meaning in life and underscored the need for serious concern about human-like robots that could potentially shadow individuals anywhere. He raised a thought-provoking question: What if these robots receive a software update and no longer exhibit friendly behavior?
Participating in the inaugural summit focused on the safety of artificial intelligence in London, Musk aimed to establish a regulatory framework overseeing companies in this field and to emphasize the associated risks. The summit concluded after two days, with consensus reached among Western governments and participating companies on a new safety testing system for the “Next Generation Frontier AI.”
Musk shared with reporters that the ultimate goal is to create a supervisory framework featuring an independent third-party governance. This oversight would act as a check on leading artificial intelligence companies, serving as an early warning system if any concerns arise.
