Despite Apple’s regular efforts to improve its smartwatches, the upgrades introduced to last fall’s models were somewhat underwhelming.
The Apple Watch 9, equipped with the S9 multi-core processor, falls short of delivering a noticeable boost in processor power for everyday use, especially compared to the Apple Watch 6 introduced three years ago.
While the American company claims a one-third increase in graphics performance, this improvement is primarily evident in specific applications like Maps and Weather, with only marginal gains. In other applications, users may not discern any substantial differences.
Unfortunately, the promised impact of the new manufacturing technology on power consumption is not readily apparent. The S9 processor now operates on a 5-nanometer architecture, down from the previous 7-nanometer architecture. This change means more transistors are crammed into the same space, theoretically reducing power consumption. However, practical usage still necessitates recharging the battery every 18 hours.
The Apple Watch 9 boasts an exceptionally bright display, reaching up to 2000 nits in brightness. This is a twofold increase compared to the Apple Watch 8 and matches the brightness level of last year’s Ultra model. Notably, the Apple Watch 9 maintains high brightness levels outdoors, ensuring users can read the screen content even in direct sunlight.
Introducing two new features, the Apple Watch 9 requires additional power. Notably, Siri commands no longer necessitate frequent internet connectivity, handling certain functions locally, such as setting alarms, launching apps, or initiating exercises.
However, the new Double Tap gesture might consume some additional power, designed to assist users when using only one hand.
Despite the enhanced display, more efficient processor, and new Double Tap feature, the external design of the Apple Watch 9 remains unchanged.
In essence, the Apple Watch continues to set the standard for iPhone users, but its premium comes at a significant cost, especially for those opting for the 45mm stainless steel model, while a smaller model is available with an aluminum body.
