In response to a recent surge in fraudulent activities, Meta Platforms made an announcement on Wednesday, revealing the initiation of full encryption for all personal conversations and calls on both Messenger and Facebook.
Breaking it down, the colossal social media company clarified that the “complete encryption feature” will be instantly accessible to users. However, the process of updating all Messenger accounts with full encryption as the default setting might take some time.
Meta pointed out that Messenger had previously offered an option to activate full encryption, allowing only the sender and recipient to access messages. With this recent change, messages will now undergo automatic encryption, according to Reuters.
Highlighting that Meta already employs message encryption on its WhatsApp platform, the company stated that this feature can serve as a safeguard against hacking, scams, and criminal activities.
It’s pertinent to recall that in 2019, officials from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia penned a letter to Facebook when the platform announced its plans for end-to-end encryption. The officials requested a halt to its implementation due to concerns related to law enforcement.
When questioned about how the company addresses such concerns, a spokesperson for Meta emphasized that encryption “plays a vital role in ensuring the security of people’s communications” by safeguarding against intrusion, scams, and criminal elements. Meta remains committed to developing robust security measures to prevent, detect, and combat misuse, all while upholding online security.
