Airbus, the European aircraft manufacturer, has revealed its latest endeavor: the development of a compact electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed for use as an “air taxi” within urban areas, as reported by the French news agency.
This innovative aircraft, named “City Airbus NextGen,” operates entirely on electric power and is vertically oriented, with remote control capabilities facilitated through the use of a tablet.
The recent trial of the aircraft showcased its ability to perform “automated takeoff, flight, and landing along a predetermined route, completing a one-hour journey,” according to Airbus.
The successful implementation of the new electric aircraft’s autonomous system, controlled by the tablet interface, marked a notable achievement. Throughout the test flight, a pilot observed as the autonomous system adeptly detected unforeseen obstacles, automatically adjusting the aircraft’s position for safe navigation.
Furthermore, Airbus highlighted that the tablet-based navigation system provides an easy means for any pilot to regain control of the aircraft and resume operations seamlessly.
