Meta has recently clarified its commitment to enhancing child safety features, aiming to protect children amid growing concerns about how its platforms recommend inappropriate and sexual content for young users.
Over the course of several months, The Wall Street Journal has extensively reported on how Meta and Instagram expose users to inappropriate and sexual content related to children.
In a detailed report in June, it was revealed how Instagram facilitated a network of accounts involved in the buying and selling of child sexual abuse materials, guiding them to each other through the platform’s recommendation algorithm.
A recent investigation further reveals that the issue extends to Facebook groups, forming an ecosystem of accounts and groups engaging in the sexual exploitation of children, some amassing around 800,000 members.
Meta’s recommendation system allowed abusive accounts to connect through features such as “Groups You Should Join” on Facebook or auto-populating hashtags on Instagram.
In response, Meta has implemented restrictions on how suspicious adult accounts interact with each other, preventing them from following each other on Instagram, avoiding recommendations, and making comments from these accounts not visible to other suspicious accounts.
Additionally, Meta has expanded its list of terms, phrases, and emojis related to child safety, employing machine learning to detect connections between various search terms.
These reports and subsequent changes concerning child safety coincide with increasing pressure from regulators in the United States and the European Union, urging Meta to address child safety concerns across its platforms.
Mark Zuckerberg, alongside other CEOs of major tech companies, is scheduled to testify before the U.S. Senate in January 2024 regarding child exploitation online.
In November, EU regulators issued Meta a final deadline to provide information on how it safeguards minors, specifically highlighting the self-generated circulation of child sexual abuse materials on Instagram and the platform’s recommendation system.
