In a groundbreaking study featured in “Nature Computational Science,” researchers explore how artificial intelligence (AI) outperforms human capabilities in generating urban plans with unprecedented efficiency.
The study underscores the potential of AI, specifically leveraging machine learning, to craft city designs allowing seamless navigation in approximately 15 minutes.
Machine learning, a pivotal branch of AI, focuses on developing systems that learn and enhance performance based on user input or supplied data.
This research contributes to the evolving landscape of AI applications, particularly in solving urban and city planning challenges. AI technologies are increasingly utilized to address issues such as improving congested cities burdened with heavy traffic and numerous facilities.
Researchers in this study at the National Center for Information Science and Technology in Beijing crafted an AI system dedicated to urban planning. It prioritizes factors like service accessibility, green spaces, traffic patterns, optimal road layouts, and land utilization, aligning with the concept of an ideal city.
According to a Science Alert report, AI has the potential to transform the vision of a green, walkable city featuring parks, pedestrian pathways, bike lanes, and efficient public transportation systems reaching key destinations within minutes.
This urban planning vision, encapsulated in the concept of a “15-minute city,” is now within closer reach. With all essential services within a 15-minute walking radius, AI is not only contributing to improved public health and reduced emissions but is also expediting the realization of this vision for urban planners.
To bring this vision to life, the research team harnessed AI to handle the tedious calculations traditionally performed by urban planners. The result was a system demonstrating 50% higher efficiency across three key metrics: service accessibility, green space availability, and traffic congestion.
While the initial computational processes took only two days, the system’s effectiveness suggests its potential for scaling to larger urban areas. Although designing an entire city poses increased complexity and time requirements, the positive outcomes indicate AI’s capacity to accelerate progress.
Scientists envision that incorporating AI into time-consuming tasks within urban planning will empower planners and engineers to focus on more intricate, human-centric aspects such as public engagement and aesthetic considerations.
